For our first Tough Mudder, Joe and I are fundraising for Meningitis Research Foundation. 

Early this year Joe was hospitalised with bacterial meningitis. Naively, we were unaware of the disturbing seriousness of it. It was only after Joe was being kept in day after day, did we begin to realise how scary it really is. Luckily, he got the care he needed early enough, after some days in the acute medical ward, he was moved to the infectious diseases ward, with the nasty migraines and light/sound sensitivity not easing up. Joe suffered from constant migraines and energy loss for a good month, and even now he still has his bad days. 

From what I found out once he was home, it is a vicious disease that can kill in just hours. 1 in 10 people die and 2 in 10 can be left with brain damage or amputation. Something I'm glad I hadn't read when he was first taken in. 

I count my lucky stars that Joe came home. He is still not feeling 100%, all the time, but we are feeling extremely grateful that he got the care when he did, and is able to take part in this event. Other people are not so lucky.

A world where people who do get ill, often very seriously, get the most effective diagnosis and treatment possible.
